Scandal and Controversy: The Challenges Facing Peru’s President

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte is facing a wave of scandals that threaten her grip on power. Allegations of a secret nose job, involvement in the “Rolexgate” bribery scandal, and accusations of transporting a fugitive politician have put her under intense scrutiny.

Boluarte, whose approval rating has plummeted to 93% disapproval, is also being investigated for the deaths of over 60 protesters during a government crackdown in 2022. The controversy surrounding her alleged plastic surgery stems from claims that she abandoned her post for nearly two weeks without informing Congress, violating constitutional requirements.

Adding to her troubles, authorities raided her home and the presidential palace in March 2024 as part of an investigation into her alleged illicit enrichment through luxury watches. Boluarte insists the watches were merely a loan that she mistakenly accepted.

Peru has a long history of political instability, with multiple former presidents facing legal challenges or imprisonment. Since 2000, seven Peruvian presidents have been brought to trial or accused of corruption or human rights abuses, reinforcing the idea of a “curse” on the presidency”.

As investigations continue, Boluarte remains defiant, denying all allegations. However, with mounting pressure from both the public and legal authorities, her political future hangs in the balance.
