Israel Eases Gaza Blockade, Allows Limited Food Supplies
After more than two months of a total blockade, Israel has announced that it will permit a basic amount of food to enter Gaza. The decision follows increasing international pressure and concerns over a worsening humanitarian crisis.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stated that the move was recommended by the military to prevent a hunger crisis in the region. However, Israel has emphasized that measures will be taken to prevent Hamas from seizing the aid.
The blockade, which began on March 2, was initially imposed to pressure Hamas into making concessions. However, UN agencies have warned of critical shortages of food, clean water, fuel, and medicine.
The announcement comes as Israel and Hamas engage in indirect talks regarding a potential ceasefire. Meanwhile, Israel’s military has launched extensive ground operations in both northern and southern Gaza.
